Cognitive Hypnotherapy
If a current pattern of behaviour or way of thinking is causing a problem for you, then it stands to reason that something in that pattern needs to change for the problem to be resolved. Using cognitive techniques and hypnotherapy, I can work with you to identify the problematic patterns and help you make those changes. This doesn't mean that it has to be difficult, with the right guidance change can be easier than you may once have thought possible.
Cognitive Hypnotherapy brings together the best of many worlds. It takes recent scientific understandings of how the brain works, ideas from a form of communication psychology called Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), the most effective techniques from a range of other therapeutic approaches. Alongside a modern view of the every day nature of trance (ever daydreamed your way through a meeting or a car journey?) this all adds up to an approach that can achieve amazing results in a short space of time. In short its flexibility means we will more than likely find an approach that works best for you as an individual.
As a clinical hypnotherapist I act as a guide to help you find the best way to the solution of your issue - so it's an active collaboration, because we think that everyone has everything they need to solve the problem, they just need help finding it.
Cognitive Hypnotherapy and How It Can Help You
Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a modern approach to hypnotherapy, which incorporates work with both the unconscious and conscious (cognitive) minds.
You are an individual and your problem is unique to you so I won’t work from set treatment plans or scripts. I will spend time really listening to the way you experience your problem plus your goals, and will then design techniques and powerful suggestion patterns especially for you.
My way of working is very different from the traditional idea of watching a swinging watch or losing control. I act as a guide to help you find the best way to the solution of your issue - it's an active collaboration because I believe that everyone has everything they need to solve their problems, they just sometimes need help finding it.
You will be in control and can communicate with me at any time during the sessions. Indeed, many people tell me that they find the sessions deeply relaxing - and that they feel like they've had the best sleep ever.
Hypnotherapy could be described as an approach for accessing and facilitating human potential to perform change work. It is based on the premise that each and every individual has the potential and resources within them to solve problems and change. Previous beliefs that the health of mind and body are separate issues are long gone. It is now understood that physical and psychological well being are inseparable. As a result, it is now possible to change those things perceived to be problems in a fast, natural and non-physical way.
Hypnotherapy can help you to achieve the transformation and emotional healing that you have been wanting for a long time. After all, life is not about being in therapy or medication; life is about living and learning.
How is Cognitive Hypnotherapy different?
Traditional hypnotherapy can tend to be a one-size-fits-all approach that is heavily dependent on scripts, but we are all unique and experience the world and our situations in unique ways – and our problems are often the result of miscalculations our brains make about the meaning of things when we’re younger, which will also vary from person to person, so the solution needs to be tailored to that uniqueness This is fundamental to Cognitive Hypnotherapy. It means that as a trained therapists I am adept at listening to clients and using the most appropriate techniques from a range of disciplines put together in a way that suits how the client thinks.
As an experienced therapist I have a wide range of approaches to utilise with the client, whether from hypnotherapy, EFT, positive psychology, cognitive behavioural therapy or gestalt to create a bespoke treatment plan for the client.
I act as a facilitator to help the client find the best way to the solution of their issues. It is an active collaboration because we believe that everyone has everything they need to solve their problem, they just need help finding it.
How is Cognitive Hypnotherapy different to traditional Hypnotherapy?
Although they share a name, modern Cognitive Hypnotherapy is very different. Many approaches to traditional hypnotherapy tend to use standard scripts on how to deal with a particular problem Cognitive Hypnotherapy takes a much more personal approach. Regardless of what label any individual gives their problem, their experiences of that problem will be different….and I always treat the person not the label. There is no single answer to all of life’s problems, and Cognitive Hypnotherapy presents a large range of techniques to help overcome barriers in the shortest time possible. Understanding the individual needs of each person really is the key to success.
Hypnosis and Trance
Hypnosis is a completely safe and natural state, much like daydreaming. You remain fully conscious of what is going on around you, and you are in control at all times. A trance state simply puts your unconscious mind in a much more receptive position, helping us to understand and find the solution to the problem. Many people find it a pleasant and relaxing experience.
Trance is not a special state
Cognitive Hypnotherapy works on the basis that trance states are part of everyday life, and include daydreaming and fantasising. Science indicates that we are in these kinds of states 90% of the time.
For example, have you have you ever driven somewhere and not remember anything of the journey?
All behaviour has a purpose
Cognitive Hypnotherapy also suggests that all behaviours have a positive purpose, so the problems we experience are just the result of unconscious thought processes based on miscalculations –
like misinterpretations of childhood experiences, or significant emotional events – which lead to actions designed to bring a benefit, even though they often don’t.
Therefore Cognitive Hypnotherapy is about ‘waking the person up’ so they remain in control of their actions, not hijacked into smoking, eating or running from spiders.
Individuals not labels
Cognitive Hypnotherapists can see four clients in one day for something with the same name, however it doesn’t mean the same thing will work for them. People experience their problem based on different miscalculations, so clients need to be treated individually – not just have the same ‘script’ read to them because they share similar symptoms.
Cognitive Hypnotherapy presents a framework that practitioners can follow to choose the most appropriate interventions for each individual, and adapt their approach according to the feedback given by the client. In that way the client is the focus, not the label the problem is given.
The solution lies within the problem
Cognitive Hypnotherapists believe that everyone has the resources they need to make the differences they want in their life. It’s an interactive therapy where the therapist acts as a guide. The principle is that the client can find their own solutions with skilled assistance. It does not involve the therapist as a ‘controlling’ agent, or someone who dictates what is ‘best’ for the client. A Cognitive Hypnotherapist works within the clients model and experience of the world, not the other way round
